Such as a decent starting rate? Also, is using Associatedcontent a viable resource for gaining 'clips' and resume-applicable experience?

RE: Understanding Freelance Writing

I've had my work published at first by calling up magazines and sending them my articles. I sent things by mail, e-mail, fax and even handed them hard copies myself at times. And it worked, anything with persistance works.

Right now I work for four magazines. It becomes easier with relationships and working on that can take some time.

RE: Understanding Freelance Writing

I use to write alot about anything that pops inside my head like poems, articles about nature, people, the environment, politics and much more when i was younger. I didn't know what to do about the papers because it's already eating my room so I decided to just throw them away until I realize that I shouldn't waste my talent/skill unless I really expose myself in public and show what I can do about writing so it worked. One day I was talking to my friend regarding about his friend's comics business I was really hesitant to join but then he encouraged me and so here I am now. I'm actually looking for a publisher to publish my works and maybe also oneday to use my scripts for play, movies, and for cartoons.

I am now balancing my time for everything like for school since i'm an advertising student in a university (still trying to keep up even when depressed for some reason), family business, and writing.

RE: Understanding Freelance Writing

Hi!

Most clients do not know what they actually want or need, and I have found that we as freelance writers must be familar with things like rates, terminology, and anything else we are supposed to know, so that we could explain these things to the client.

In my experience, however, it is a good idea to fix up the terms of payment beforehand, and make sure that your payment reaches you on time before you start the next phase of the project.

I have been approached by several clients, some of whom are familar with what freelance writing involves, and several who are not. I have had to state my terms clearly, and I have been misunderstood several times, perhaps, I feel, due to cultural differences.

However, I have been enjoying myself as a freelance writer, and have been raking in the big bucks lately!

RE: Understanding Freelance Writing

I'm a great sales person and an excellent conversationalist so all I have to do is mention what I do around business people and I can get more clients that way. I also have had people mention their business to me and then I offer my services. The best way to do it is to go out where business people meet after work like a lounge club or a restaurant and network. I can tell you a secret though, the best way to advertise to the public for me is highway billboards.

RE: Understanding Freelance Writing

Hi. How have clients approached you, responded to you, what levels of quality have you noticed, etc?
