| A friend of mine (unrelated field to writing) has been trying to chase an unpaid invoice for months now. The tax people are on his back, but what can he do if the client won't pay. This has got to be the greatest downfall, yes?

| Hi I am not speaking from experience now but I think the best thing to do is to get payment on completion of the job. Send the client about 75 % of the job so that they can see that you have completed it to their satisfaction. When you recieve payment in full send him the last few pages of the job. When working with a client in another country who is not connected to a company it might be a good idea to request a copy of their Id. There is not much you can do with this but if the client is unwilling to send you this then you will probably know that they are un-trustworthy.

| You can still sign up through Paypal (Australia has its own paypal area now) as most countries are covered. Once logged in, you can invoice anyone anywhere in your own currency and they get the message to pay so much in their currency. Be careful to add at least 3% and another $1 for withdrawing as Paypal fees can add up; but not as bad as a merchant account. Other ways nationally are by Money Order or Bank Cheque, or by International Bank Draft or Telegraphic Transfer (AUD $25).

| I'd go for the paypal option every time - it is so much easier to obtain payment from clients, wherever they are in the world. I tend to leave the money in the paypal account and use it to purchase goods that are related to my writing - research books etc. Yes - you must remember to build in the paypal fee and the withdrawal figure too!! I didn't do that to start off with and the first couple of jobs took a bit of a financial body blow - but hey, that's what life's about - trying new things and finding out what works best for you. Would be interested to see what other payment options people recommend. ax
