I am getting back into freelancing after a hiatus to raise a family. I need some guidance on the "going rates" for writing and editing.
Thanks for any and all help!
Maureen

| Hi Maureen... Most people are recommending the rate at $.50/word as a general. I usually will increase or decrease depending on the type of project, the research necessary and how quickly they need the turn over. tbwebber

| Hello, I was just wondering what to charge as well. Is there a way of telling how much was the winning bid on any particular project? darcy

| The Hourly rate starting from $3 to $5 Per hourly will be fine and new freelance providers will find good offers from the prospective buyers .The lower rate always have great response . But you will have to maintain the quality.

| I have found that hourly rates for editing projects start at $22/hr and go no higher than $30/hr. Writing rates start around $25 and can go as high as $35 or more. I have worked primarily for medical publishing houses -- the work is plentiful. If you want to learn the American Medical Association style, it's a great place to start getting work. Sage Publications has editing/proofing tests on their Web site. You can take the tests and get on with them and never be without work. When editing medical journals, the pay rate is by the page: $3 to $4 per page. I decided to branch out and am now working through various temp agencies that specialize in writers/editors/designers: Aquent, The Creative Group, Creatives On Call, Volt Services -- many are out there. The writing/editing rates seem to be the same: $25/hr is the median. I was able to get an easy job proofreading for $28/hr, too. I've been editing/writing as an independent contractor for 3 years and I have never been without work. There are "feast" and "famine" periods -- times when I work around the clock and times when I don't have much work and spend time looking for it. I have found that now -- spring -- is the best time for work. Things really slow down between November and February.
